About

About Stswecem’c Xget’tem First Nation (Canoe Creek)

Stswecem'c Xget'tem First Nation is a Secwepemc community on both sides of the Fraser River, guided by the motto "Every Voice Matters."

Stswecem'c Xget'tem First Nation (SXFN) was formed when the Canoe Creek Band and the Dog Creek Band joined together. In Northern Secwepemctsín, Canoe Creek is Stswecem'c and Dog Creek is Xget'tem, so the Nation's name brings together both places. The territory lies on both sides of the Fraser River, around the Dog Creek and Canoe Creek basins and the canyon between them. The Nation has never signed a treaty or given up its land.

The people are Secwepemc. The Nation's vision is "An economically and politically self-sustaining Secwepemc community living our Secwepemc culture, language, and traditions," and its motto is "Every Voice Matters." Phyllis Webstad, the founder of Orange Shirt Day, is a member of the community.

The Nation offers programs and services for its members, including:

  • Health, housing and education
  • Family services
  • Treaty and economic development
  • Language revitalization and land stewardship

Through its business arm, SXDC Ltd., the Nation creates economic opportunities for its members. In 2022, nearly 7,800 hectares of ranch land and grazing licences covering 56,000 hectares were returned to SXFN. The Nation negotiates a treaty through the Northern Secwepemc te Qelmucw treaty group. Learn more at sxfn.ca.
